Like most parents who enrol their children in kindergarten, their aim is to build basic foundation, shaping characters and soicalisation skills as to ensure their children grow up to have the capability to successfully face challenges they will experience as adults in life.
The same logic applies in raising a puppy. Puppies need to be conditioned, socialised and learn in a well structured & consistent manner. That is why it is impossible not to place emphasis on the importance of proper puppy early education.
Everyone loves a good behaved, well mannered dog. Therefore, it is imperative to give your puppy a good head start in their life.
Puppy Development
In the first several months of a dog’s life, the puppy will go through four critical development stages that will stay with the dog into adulthood.
First Critical Period from Birth to 3 weeks old (Neonatal Period)
Second Critical Period from 3 to 8 weeks old (Transitional Period)
Third Critical Period from 8 to 12 weeks old (Socialisation / Fear Imprint Period)
Fourth Critical Period from 12 to 16 weeks old (Seniority Classification Period)
Therefore, it is vital that as a responsible pet owner to insure that the future of the dog will be happy, healthy, well adjusted lifestyle after they bring their new puppy home after 8 weeks.
Puppy age between 8 - 12 weeks old is known as the socialization / Fear Imprint period. During this stage, puppy has developed all of his communication facilities and the pup learns to be integrated into human society and socialized with other animals in the household. Puppies that missed the opportunity to be properly socialized with their own kind will result in incompetent interactions with other dogs later in their life.
Whilst the puppy is going through socialization, the puppy will also go through an important fear imprint period. Any traumatic, frightening or painful experience will have a lasting effect on the puppy if it occurred at this stage. During this period, if puppy is not handled correctly, it could give the dog a lasting fear of say traffic or other frightening noises (such as vacuum, washing machine & thunder etc) or events
